It's Not About Willpower

For years, we’ve been told that managing weight is simple:
Eat less. Move more.
On the surface, this sounds logical. But for many people, this message hasn’t matched their lived experience.
If weight management were truly this simple, far fewer people would struggle.
Instead, this message has often left people feeling like they’ve failed—that they just need to try harder, be more disciplined, or have more willpower.
But what if the problem isn’t you?
What if the message itself is incomplete?
We now understand that weight is not just about choices or effort. It is influenced by complex biological systems that regulate hunger, fullness, and energy use. These systems are designed to keep you alive—not to make weight loss easy.
When we reduce weight to a simple equation, we overlook the many factors that are outside of a person’s control. And in doing so, we unintentionally create shame and self-blame.
It’s time for a more honest and compassionate conversation.
Because the truth is:
👉 It’s not about willpower—and it never was.
